My grandfather was Theodore Samuel Holland he was a market gardener, and lived with his wife Edith, in a cottage on Station Rd. He had a small shop, and also sold his wares from a horse and cart. My father Frederick Thomas Holland 1908-1976 was born in Long Buckby, he had three brothers, Ralph,Leslie,Frank, and sister Lucie. I was born in Portsmouth in1937. In 1941 during the second World War, I was evacuated from Portsmouth to Buckby with my mother. We lived in two adjoining cottages in Brington Road. One cottage was occupied by his brother Frank and wife Emily Holland. This was the one where I stayed with my two cousins Richard and Roger, who are about the same age as myself.
In the other cottage lived his sister Lucie and her husband Ernest Marshall and two more cousins Cynthia and Christine, also my father’s mother Edith Holland. My mother lived in this cottage. I have wonderful memories of country walks, picking blackberries, and once all of us being chased by a bull.
I now live in Portsmouth, but will always have fond memories of Long Buckby, and am in touch with my cousins still living in the area.
